Most noticeable were the large clouds of small insects highlighted by the sun shining through them.
Before setting off down the trail to the west, we spotted an Osprey flying across above the river. A good start. However, at the start of our walk, it was very quiet--- and peaceful. For a while we heard no bird sounds.

We also saw 3 mule deer drinking from the river, a reddish squirrel feeding on some leaves, a Cottontail Rabbit, and a bullfrog (according to one of our group, an invasive species)
